NZ Underground Making Ground: Raka Releases EP ‘Supernova’
New Zealand music artist,
Raka, dropped his latest EP ‘Supernova’ produced by
fellow New Zealander LMC.
The project features five tracks, and finds Raka skillfully navigating the line between genres, exploring a blend of hip-hop, rap, emo, and trap.
Raka, an Auckland born artist based in Avondale, is respected amongst New Zealand’s underground music scene as a pioneer in creating a new style of music where artistry extends beyond vocals.
His style has drawn the attention of big global names in the music industry, collaborating with producers for Joji, Nessly, Night Lovell and Lil West.
LMC, who originated from Nelson, has also worked with some big figures in the industry including Rich the Kid. This year he will be performing at the Rhythm and Vines festival for the second time.
Supernova will mark the first official project release for Raka, following a string of successful single tracks shared on SoundCloud.
His sound throughout the EP is a combination of serrate, gravelly tuned rap vocals and a dexterous singing voice. It’s an intoxicating mixture.
Throughout Supernova, Raka reflects on the notions of contradictory ignorance and materialism which is embedded in a strong delivery of emotions.
He creates an emotional transparency in his music, by homing in on the contemporary understanding of longing and depression, and about the often-unhealthy ways we cope. However, like a Supernova, there is a bright and optimistic energy to his words.
Obvious within his mastery of evolution across his SoundCloud uploads leading up to Supernova, it is clear the artist is quite publicly in the process of becoming. What comes next is exciting.
The EP is available now on Spotify, iTunes, SoundCloud and Apple Music.
