Over 15,000 racegoers are expected to join a range of sportspeople, celebrities and politicians for the 2018 Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup Day at Trentham on Saturday, with Wellington’s most prestigious race to be run at 4.57pm.
A warm but overcast day has been forecast for the Hutt Valley, with an expected high of 25 degrees.
Patrick Erin, trained by Brian & Shane
Anderton of Dunedin, is currently the $4.20 favourite
followed by Alinko Prince at $4.50, trained by Fraser Auret
of Marton. Looming large further down the order is Highlad,
from the famed Baker/Forsman stable. An Australian campaign
under his belt, including a run in the Victoria Derby,
he’ll be a formidable opponent and is current paying
$9.80.
With over $1 million dollars in stakes on
offer for owners across all races, there will be plenty of
excitement on course.
The Blackcaps will be among the
crowds, with captain Kane Williamson on hand to present the
Wellington Cup, and Tim Southee and Mitch Santner will
impart their sense of style as judges for the Williment
Travel Fashion in the Field, alongside Hannah Laity, Julia
Leuchars and Sammy Glover.
After a crowd-rousing
performance of the national anthem last year, singing
sensation Tiana So’oialo returns to do it again this
year.
A number of members of parliament and opposition
will be in attendance and it’s anticipated that some more
than others will be able to offer insight into the fields
for not only the Wellington Cup, but for the two Group 1
races - the Harcourts Thorndon Mile and the JR & N Berkett
Telegraph, both very high quality fields with $200,00 and
$250,000 on offer for owners respectively.
The party
won’t be finishing after the last race either, with
international act Sneaky Sound System live in concert after
the last race, with free admission to all ticket
holders.
