Press Play Burlesque Improv Competition is back for it's second year at the wonderful Cassette Nine in Auckland CBD. We had an incredible, sell out competition in 2018 which was full of laughs, frivolity, drama and the (very) unexpected! Va-Va-Voom Productions and Cassette Nine are shining up their dancing shoes, getting ready to put on another highly entertaining round of shenanigans for competitors and audience members alike.

How does Press Play work? Our eight contestants, all from around New Zealand, will choose a musical genre and then be given a random song from the genre they picked. Then, they'll be given an “ask for” from the audience (a suggestion as to how to perform, or what to include as a part of their routine) and then will have to shimmy, shake and improvise for their lives. The two highest scoring performers at the end of the night will then compete against each other in a battle royale of off-the-cuff burlesque to win the title of Press Play Champion 2019.

Our venue for the evening is where all the kool kats hang, Cassette Nine. They promise to fill you with special cocktails, world famous teapots, tantalizing meals and other mouth-watering refreshments.

Our competitors for Press Play 2019 are:
• Simone V. (AK)
• Pandora Cherie (AK)

Howard Davis: Roddy Doyle's Grim and Gritty Rosie

Although it was completed over two years ago, Roddy Doyle's first original screenplay in over eighteen years has only just arrived in New Zealand. It's been well worth the wait. More>>

Simon Nathan: No Ordinary In-Laws

The title of this short memoir by Keith Ovenden is misleading – it would be better called “Bill, Shirley and me” as it is an account of Ovenden’s memories of his parents-in-law, Bill Sutch and Shirley Smith. His presence is pervasive through the book. All three participants are (or were) eloquent, strongly-opinionated intellectuals who have made significant contributions to different aspects of New Zealand life. Their interactions were often complex and difficult... More>>
