The Journey That Defies Physics

My 9 year-old son was sitting eating his breakfast, when he asked me this question, "Mom, do you really think I can become a professional soccer player?"

My back was turned to him at the time as I was leaning over the sink, drying a wet dish with a hand towel and thinking about the concert I had seen the night before. My head had not yet left Mohegan Sun Arena and the band that I first fell in love with in high school. Certain I was not alone, I reminisced at how emotionally-connected every fan that evening was to the songs they heard.

There wasn't an unoccupied seat in the house, despite the switch in lead vocalists, the longevity of the other band members, or the classic songs that seem "not to understand" how different they are from today's music. And still, they invigorate a crowd of all ages.

Every note was perfectly played.

The entire performance was orchestrated by experienced, masterful hands (well beyond mere 'rote' coordination).

And the flow between the groundbreaking music and humble song man - the same one who attributes his unprecedented, current circumstances to "the belief his mother had in him" - clearly explained why this band was flying high and selling out, both East and West.

The indomitable spirit of the senior band members understood the indomitable spirit of their music and, together, they attracted the indomitable spirit of Arnel Pineda to ignite a whole new era of "performing" for Journey. With all that energy going 'round and eager, loyal fans waiting in the wings, there is little wonder why this band defied normal "music" physics while fully embodying the concept of "manifestation."

None of this would have happened, however, had Arnel Pineda's mom failed to let her son know just how much she believed in him. An eventual orphan at a very young age, his fate might have easily taken an entirely different, tragic direction had her words not "seeped in and stayed with him" throughout his journey to the stage of Journey.

Placing the dish on the counter along with my hand towel, I turned to my son and answered him while looking deeply into his eyes, "Yes, Austen, I really think you can become a professional soccer player."

It was the most practical answer that I could give to help my son walk the steps of his own journey in the way that I wanted for him and he deserved. No doubt, Arnel's mother, nor Arnel, nor Neal, Ross, Jonathan or Steve would have said any less.

Thank you to the management team of Journey for providing me the tickets enabling me to write this post.
