Dunedin Counts Down To FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

(Dunedin, Tuesday 19 July 2022) The countdown to FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 is on, with Wednesday 20 July marking just One Year To Go until the tournament kicks off in Australasia. As the only South Island host city, Dunedin is celebrating this major milestone by lighting up the stadium with FIFA colours, along with other fun activities involving the community.

One of several similar celebrations being held throughout New Zealand and Australia, the celebrations will all share the theme of unity, bringing together diverse people and cultures. Over two nights, 19 and 20 July from 6 pm, the Unity Lights display will be visible from across the city.

A community event and activation supported by Football South, DVML and the Dunedin City Council will take place in the stadium on 20 July, including a human formation of the numbers 365, fun football activities, and a skills session with Football Fern Emma Rolston.

Mayor of Dunedin Aaron Hawkins, says, “Dunedin is gearing up to host one of the world’s highest profile sporting tournaments, with preparations well underway across the council and our city partners.

“With six matches being played in Dunedin a year from now, we’re looking forward to getting in front of fans from around the globe and welcoming an influx of spectators to the city.”

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 New Zealand COO Jane Patterson said it was fantastic to kick off the official countdown to the tournament with celebrations across both host nations.

“The four host cities across Aotearoa have really embraced the One Year To Go milestone with some inspiring events today. You can feel the excitement building, especially with more teams qualifying.”

Qualifying tournaments are currently being held globally and by one year to go, nineteen of the thirty-two teams will be selected, with the remaining teams confirmed between now and February next year. The official draw will be held on 22 October 2022, which will determine the teams that will play in Dunedin.
