Excellence In Lifeguarding Honoured At 2025 Aquatic Awards

Auckland’s lifeguards were in the spotlight tonight, where two lifeguard achievements were honoured at the 2025 Aquatics Awards tonight. The awards highlight the vital role lifeguards play in keeping New Zealand’s aquatic spaces safe.

Kate McMullan from Auckland Council was named Lifeguard of the Year 2025 for her exceptional professionalism, leadership, and dedication to the aquatics industry. Known for her enthusiasm and commitment, Kate has contributed significantly to training initiatives, developed network-wide programmes, and played a key role in enhancing competency frameworks.

“The judges were impressed by Kate’s passion and commitment to career growth, describing her as the future of the industry,” said Rhiann Collins, Recreation Aotearoa Aquatics Programme Manager.

Alongside Kate’s individual achievement, the winners of the OPSEC National Pool Lifeguard Competition were also celebrated. Auckland Council has won the competition for a third consecutive year with their team, ‘Guardians of the Deep End, Vol. 3’.

This competition tests teams on their lifeguard knowledge, rescue skills, first aid, teamwork, customer service, and creativity. Six teams battled in challenging scenarios including relays, rescues, and knowledge tests to be crowned national champions.

“Lifeguards are the frontline guardians of aquatic safety. Celebrating both individual excellence and team skill through these awards highlights their critical role in protecting our communities,” Collins added.

Nearly 200 aquatic professionals gathered at Te Pae, Christchurch to celebrate achievements shaping New Zealand’s aquatic industry.
