Queer Indie-Pop Group Platonic Sex Share 'Undoes'; Debut Album Out Sep 19

[Monday, 25 August, 2025] A caterwauling biopsy of exhaustion and anxiety, ‘Undoes’ is the harrowing third and final single from Magandjin/Brisbane indie-pop group Platonic Sex’s debut LP Face To The Flywire (out September 19 independently). Opening on a minimal landscape of voice and guitar, it lopes, then gallops into a tempest that threatens to pull it from its roots, evoking the feeling of Sylvia Plath’s Ariel through the lens of Phoebe Bridgers or Indigo De Souza.

Lyrically, ‘Undoes’ spirals through the physical and emotional arc of a panic attack. “You’re gripping on, but you know you’ve got to go through it to come out the other side,” says singer-guitarist Bridget Brandolini (they/them). “It starts timid, exploring how I could navigate a relationship causing both people so much anxiety. Then it shifts into frustration and anger, and finally acceptance – that sometimes, you’re the bad guy in someone else’s story. It doesn’t resolve the hopelessness.”

First drafted in 2021 and shaped through live performance, the song evolved significantly in the studio. “We cut an instrumental section, then restructured the lyrics – the chorus became the verse, the bridge became the chorus. We added a big, low piano note to anchor it, and layered tons of vocals at the end,” Brandolini explains.

Big, reverberant drums – influenced by Ethel Cain – were drummer Ryan Hammermeister’s favourite part of the production. “It was completely free, recording without a click track,” they explain. “Just pure, hitting everything together, building a slow heartbeat with the band and then rising together to create that emotional intensity, unfolding chaos. We layered so much in the end. I still go back and hear new things.”

Accompanying the release is a self-directed handycam video, shot by Hammermeister, capturing the intimacy and emotional rawness of the track in visual form.

Face To The Flywire is Platonic Sex’s first studio LP – a coming-of-age story unfolding within the natural poetry of Queensland. Recorded across Golden Retriever Studios, The Tunnel, and Prawn Studios, it was produced with Antonia Gauci (GAUCI, The Buoys, Body Type), Isaac Rogers, and Sam Cromack (Ball Park Music).

Platonic Sex – Bridget Brandolini, Ryan Hammermeister (he/they), Jane Millroy (she/her), and recent addition Jess Cameron (she/her) – have remained rooted in their hometown of Meanjin/Brisbane, resisting the pressure to relocate. Their backgrounds in jazz, folk, and other touring acts filter into a warm, sun-bleached sound shaped by the languor and intimacy of their community. “These songs feel nostalgic, like the Christmas holidays,” says Millroy. “Sitting on the back deck and listening to cicadas.”

After releasing their debut EP Grip in 2022, Platonic Sex were named a triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and won the Carol Lloyd Award at the 2023 Queensland Music Awards. They've showcased twice at BIGSOUND, including Amazon Music’s PRIDE Party, and in 2024, performed at The Great Escape in the UK.

Their music has received praise and airplay from The Guardian, Junkee, Music Feeds, triple j, fbi.radio, SYN, 2SER, and tastemaking editorial playlists across Spotify and Apple Music. They’ve shared stages with Angel Olsen, Jen Cloher, The Beths, Ball Park Music, and WAAX, and performed at Rough Trade East, Laneway Festival, St Kilda Fest, and Mountain Goat Valley Crawl.

Platonic Sex began 2025 as Best Rock Song finalists at the QLD Music Awards. A run of shows followed, including She Can Rage in Sydney, a sold-out DIY headliner in Brisbane with Anti Dismal, and a shoutout on national TV during the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade broadcast.

This October, they’ll join the 4ZZZ 50th Birthday Market Day line-up alongside The Saints, Regurgitator, Tropical Fuck Storm, and more, as well as support jasmine.4.t on her debut Australian tour.
