'Breath Of Fire' Akawui Ft. Swizl Jager

Canadian singer-songwriter Akawui, of Mapuche Indigenous origins from Chile, has joined forces with Māori artist and rapper Swizl Jager from Aotearoa for the new release of ‘Breath of Fire’. This song is a powerful statement of resilience and a call to the inner fighter within everyone. This new version features rap in Spanish and Te Reo Māori and incorporates a haka. The word "haka" translates to ‘Breath of fire’ in some interpretations. The collaboration represents more than just a musical partnership; it is a powerful solidification of the bond between two Indigenous nations - Māori of Aotearoa, and Mapuche of Chile, acknowledging their shared history of colonisation and struggle.
Swizl, of (Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Te Arawa, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa, Te aupouri, Ngāti raukawa, Taranaki whānui, Ngā Ruahine, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Mahanga, Ngāti Paoa), was immediately drawn to the original 2022 version of ‘Breath of Fire’, and the two met in person at the International Indigenous Music Summit in Toronto in 2024 to record the new track. The music video, filmed across two continents, serves as a visual testament to this international partnership. Half was filmed in Toronto, Canada, the other half in Tamaki Makaurau, New Zealand, with production support from Derek Brin of Fierce Music Group Studios, Huia Hamon from Aotearoa, and George Jordan of "Omen FPV."
The video also features both artists waving a ‘Free Palestine flag’ in a powerful statement against colonialism and genocide, reflecting Chile's large Palestinian community and the ongoing struggles of Indigenous peoples worldwide. ‘Breath of Fire’ was produced at HIBIKI Studio in Montreal and Fierce Music Group Studio in Toronto. Formerly a professional MMA fighter, Akawui has a pro record of 4-1-0. Trained in Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling & Boxing. As music is a part of his preparation before he fights, Akawui wanted to compose a song that could reflect all the feelings of rage and fire, and place it into a song. That is how Breath of Fire originally came to be.
