Kiwi Gamers Top Australia To Secure World Championship Spot

New Zealand’s national esports team, the E Blacks, have cemented their place on the world stage after a thrilling victory against Australia in the Dota 2 Oceanic Qualifiers for the World Esports Championships.

In a hard-fought series, the Kiwi squad defeated their trans-Tasman rivals 2-1, successfully defending the Oceanic title they first claimed last year. The victory is a landmark moment, backing up their 2024 win that broke a five-year losing streak against the Australian side.

The match itself was a rollercoaster. New Zealand took the first game convincingly, but a critical mistake in the second allowed Australia to level the series. Facing immense pressure, the E Blacks delivered a calm and clinical performance in the final game to secure the win.

Dota 2 is one of the biggest esports in the world. With over seven million monthly players and a professional circuit famous for its record-breaking prize money. A single Dota 2 tournament has previously awarded a prize pool of over $60 million NZD, larger than the prize money for the Cricket World Cup and the Masters golf tournament combined.

"We studied their playstyle and went in with a solid game plan," said Christchurch raised team captain Sam 'Fury' Johnson. "Losing that second game was tough, but the way the team managed to reset and stick to our strategy in the decider was incredible. I'm really proud of our ability to regain composure when it mattered most."

Part of the Kiwi team’s newfound success may come from an innovative training strategy implemented by the NZ team. "We believe many modern esports practices lead to burnout, with over-training actually harming performance," says Jonathan Jansen, CEO of NZ Esports. "The team implemented an innovative strategy that reduced total screen time and put a bigger focus on targeted, effective practice. This result shows that looking after our players and training smarter is the key to success."

The victory means the E Blacks will represent New Zealand at the World Esports Championships later this year, competing amongst the top 16 nations from a starting pool of 151 countries.
