National Fundraiser To Support The Growth Of Ice Hockey In New Zealand

The Pucks for Progress charitable trust has launched a nationwide raffle to raise vital funds for the rapid growth of ice hockey in New Zealand, helping to remove financial barriers for youth players representing their region or country.

“Ice hockey in New Zealand is more than just a game, it’s a pathway,” says Michelle Wallis, Chairperson of Pucks for Progress.

“For many young Kiwis it opens doors - to friendships, travel, and international opportunities they never imagined possible. Our players are achieving incredible things, but the costs of travel and tournaments can be overwhelming for families. This fundraiser will help ensure that every player with passion and talent can pursue their dreams on the ice.”

With more than 2,500 registered players nationwide, including over 1,800 juniors and female players, ice hockey is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing winter sports.

The New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation reported a 9 percent increase in membership in 2023, driven largely by the surge in youth and “Learn to Play” programmes - clear proof of the sport’s expanding footprint and future potential.

Funds raised will directly support the advancement of amateur ice hockey in New Zealand, including youth development programmes, representative player assistance, and upgrades to community rink facilities.

“This raffle is about giving back to the sport that gives us so much,” says Michelle. “Every ticket sold helps build the future of ice hockey in New Zealand - from grassroots to elite levels. Now, we’re calling on fans, friends, families and sportspeople across the country to get behind it.”

7-Day Canada Trip up for grabs!

The raffle is hosted on Gala Bid - a secure, cloud-based fundraising platform used by charities, schools, and community organisations to run raffles, auctions, and donation campaigns.

The raffle offers one lucky winner a 7-day trip for two to Vancouver, Canada, to watch the Vancouver Canucks play live in the NHL. The prize package includes:

• Return flights for two to Vancouver
• Seven nights’ accommodation
• Tickets to three live Vancouver Canucks NHL games, including a VIP experience
• Airport transfers and local transport
• NZ $3,100 spending money

Tickets are available now via www.galabid.com/nhl. Only 3,500 tickets are available, with sales closing at 12 noon on 24 November 2025.

The draw will take place under a Department of Internal Affairs Class 3 Lottery licence, ensuring all proceeds are returned to authorised charitable purposes.
