Cathedral Square Unearthed Exhibition In High Demand
The upcoming Cathedral Square Unearthed archaeology exhibition, in Christ Church Cathedral from 16–22 February, is fully booked - highlighting what organisers describe as the “huge demand from Ōtautahi Christchurch people to engage with the city’s history inside Christ Church Cathedral.”
Katharine Watson, Chair of the Christchurch Archaeology Project, says the overwhelming response highlights the community’s strong desire to reconnect with the Cathedral and explore the rich archaeological discoveries of Cathedral Square.
The free exhibition is delivered through one-hour tours, each limited to 50 visitors, with several operating daily across the eight-day programme. Due to capacity limits, reservations are essential and made online via Humanitix, where a waitlist for tickets is currently operating.
“Given this overwhelmingly positive response,” says Watson, “we are delighted to announce that we have secured space at The Crossing to re-mount the exhibition from 24 February to 22 March. We are incredibly grateful to The Crossing for their generosity in sharing their space with us.”
Dean of Christchurch Very Rev’d Ben Truman said the exhibition was another chance for people to enjoy the Cathedral space, "The Cathedral has enjoyed hosting many public events in its semi restored state. Gathering community and sharing stories is part of our mission. With our adjusted approach to reinstatement, we’re looking forward to continuing the manaakitanga in a restored heart of the city."
“The Cathedral is part of our city’s story, so it’s a delight to be able to use the building to host this stunning exhibition to tell more stories of this city and its lived history” said Dean Ben.
Health and safety protocols at Christ Church Cathedral restrict entry to visitors under the age of 10 and those with limited mobility. The additional exhibition period at The Crossing will provide an opportunity for those unable to attend the Cathedral venue to experience the exhibition in a more broadly accessible setting.
For those who may miss out on this opportunity to visit the Cathedral, the reinstatement team Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd (CCRL) will be running an open weekend on 13, 14 & 15 March, which will be complimented by Cathedral Square Unearthed walking tours. Details will be released on CCRL social media channels as they become available.
