PARK(ing) Day: Bigger Brighter Entertaining Eclectic
This is the 13th year Wellington Sculpture Trust has hosted PARK(ing) Day. An event where 30 car parks are handed over to artists and other creative thinkers to place public art in public spaces usually occupied by cars. Here, you will see amazing talent in the heart of the city, safely connect with other Wellingtonians and visitors and be part of the thriving city that is Wellington.
On Saturday 28 February between 10am and 5pm the section of Cuba Street between Ghuznee and Vivian Streets and the lower part of Garrett Street will be closed off to create a festive, engaging, family-friendly event.
In collaboration with the Creative Capital Arts Trust (CCAT) and Wellington City Council, PARK(ing) Day for the second year in a row will be part of CCAT’s Summer Series. The Series is intended to be more than just an event – “it’s a celebration of Wellington’s creative heartbeat”.
Jane Black, Chair of the Sculpture Trust, said: “The Trust greatly welcomes this collaboration with the CCAT and Council to celebrate Wellington’s creative strength and dynamism - and willingness to explore new approaches both toward creative expression but also collaboration with local businesses.”
“PARK(ing) Day is about thinking creatively about how we as a community can better use public space. Join us on 28 February in a relaxed and festive environment to be entertained, stimulated and engaged by our very diverse range of participants. This is public art’ which is easily accessible to all, both those occupying the spaces and those engaging with them.”
“Alongside performances from Fringe Festival acts in Glover Park throughout the day, there are more than 30 car parks occupied where you can:
- hop on a bike to activate tube characters
- have your portrait painted
- take a piece of Wellington home with you – a print of the koru pattern on manholes around our city - share Māori knowledge and artistry with Taonga Puoro and interactive vibration using a range of tools and instruments
- be part of a production line for urban green-making devices
- be entertained by a drag group who have just been to a street busker festival in Christchurch - weave strips of textile waste or “stitch and chat”
- And, so much more!
Keep the day free and join us on the street on Saturday 28 February between 10 am – 5 pm. And grab a voting slip available at each space to indicate your favourite space. The winner will get a prize of $500.
The Trust is grateful for the continued support from Wellington City Council as well as Portsmouth Rentals for their ongoing support.
