Te Hiku Media, Canada’s Indigenous Languages Office Sign MOU To Advance Language Revitalization And Data Sovereignty
The Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages (OCIL) and Te Hiku Media have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration and knowledgesharing in support of Indigenous language revitalization in Canada and Aotearoa New Zealand.
The partnership with Te Hiku Media establishes a framework for cooperation grounded in Indigenousled approaches, respect for selfdetermination, and shared responsibility for protecting and promoting Indigenous languages.
Te Hiku Media is internationally recognized for groundbreaking work in Māori language revitalization, including Indigenous data sovereignty and digital language innovation. Through this agreement, OCIL and Te Hiku Media will explore opportunities to share knowledge, practices, and perspectives that support language protection, transmission, and innovation across Indigenous communities.
At a time when Indigenous languages face urgent challenges, the partnership demonstrates the power of Indigenous Peoples leading solutions on a global stage. It also supports the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2033), and emphasizes Indigenous Peoples as leaders in all languagerelated initiatives.
OCIL and Te Hiku Media look forward to advancing this collaboration through dialogue, knowledge exchange, and future joint initiatives that uplift and strengthen Indigenous languages.
