Local Author Leaves Books Across Christchurch For Women Facing Infertility And Childlessness This Mother’s Day

Christchurch author Tansy Boggon is marking Mother’s Day this year with a quiet act of generosity. She is leaving copies of her novels in locations across the city for women to discover.

From the 4th to the 10th of May, Tansy will place 25 copies of her books, The Weight of a Woman and The Tears of a Woman, in local cafés, businesses, and community locations, inviting women to find and keep them.

The initiative is dedicated to women for whom Mother’s Day can feel complicated, including those who are childless not by choice, navigating infertility, or experiencing difficult relationships with body image, identity, or self-worth.

In New Zealand, infertility is more common than many realise, with around one in four people experiencing fertility challenges at some point in their lives. Despite this, the emotional impact often remains invisible, particularly during socially significant moments like Mother’s Day.

“Mother’s Day can be a meaningful celebration, but it can also be quietly painful for many women,” says Tansy. “I had spare copies of my novels and wanted to use this opportunity to offer a gift to women who may feel unworthy of celebration at this time.”

Tansy, a culinary nutritionist and author of five books, has written extensively about her own experience of childlessness not by choice, and the process of building a meaningful life outside traditional expectations of motherhood.

Her novels explore themes of womanhood and self-worth. Each book includes a note inviting the finder to keep it or pass it on when the time feels right.

“I hope these books find the women who need them,” Tansy says. “Even if it’s just a small moment of connection, or a reminder that they are not alone.”

Tansy will share daily clues via her Instagram stories to guide people to each location.
