The Dire Straits Experience -- The Long Highway Tour Announced
The Dire Straits Experience brings the legendary sound of one of rock’s most iconic bands back to Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland this August
The celebrated and critically acclaimed The Dire Straits Experience is set to return to New Zealand in August for three exclusive shows as part of their highly anticipated Long Highway 2026 World Tour.
Performing the unforgettable music of Dire Straits with stunning authenticity, world-class musicianship and full concert production, the internationally acclaimed seven-piece ensemble will play Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on Thursday 20 August, Christchurch Town Hall on Friday 21 August, and Auckland’s Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre on Saturday 22 August.
Assembled by original Dire Straits saxophonist Chris White — a key member of the Brothers In Arms and On Every Street tours — alongside acclaimed singer and guitarist Terence Reis, The Dire Straits Experience delivers a breath-taking journey through Mark Knopfler’s platinum-selling catalogue, bringing one of the greatest songbooks in rock history back to life on stage.
Audiences can expect a two-hour live concert spectacular packed with era-defining anthems including Money for Nothing, Sultans of Swing, Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet, Brothers in Arms, Private Investigations, Tunnel of Love, Telegraph Road and more.
Handpicked from the highest levels of the international touring circuit, the ensemble features musicians whose collective careers include performances with Paul McCartney, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Robbie Williams, ABC, Tears For Fears, Roachford — and Mark Knopfler himself. Together, they recreate the musical power, precision and spirit that made Dire Straits a global phenomenon.
More than 40 years since Sultans of Swing first introduced the world to Mark Knopfler’s unmistakable guitar and songwriting genius, Dire Straits’ music remains a defining force in rock history. With over 120 million albums sold worldwide, the band’s songs continue to resonate across generations.
Dire Straits also holds a unique and enduring bond with New Zealand and Australian audiences. Their monumental 1986 Brothers In Arms tour sold more than 900,000 tickets across Australasia, setting concert attendance records that stood for more than three decades and cementing the band’s place in the musical DNA of the region.
“We absolutely loved our 2024 New Zealand Tour and can’t wait to be returning with The Dire Straits Experience to play for all of our friends in New Zealand. See you in August!” said Chris White.
While Dire Straits officially disbanded in 1995, their music has never faded. The Dire Straits Experience is more than a tribute — it is a powerful celebration of a musical legacy that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
For Kiwi fans, this is a rare opportunity to relive the songs, the sound, and the spirit of one of rock’s greatest bands — live in concert once again.
