The Correspondence School Alive With The Sound Of Children!

The corridors of The Correspondence School came alive with the sounds of real-live children today! Parents, whanau and caregivers are in town for the annual Correspondence School Parents and Supervisors Conference and some of the children attend too.

Whilst parents gather to discuss issues surrounding distance education, improve skills and meet other parents and caregivers – their children get a chance to meet their teachers and each other.

The conference, which runs 22 to 24 May, traditionally attracts around 100 parents from across New Zealand. Some of their children attend too – going to “student sessions’ whilst their parents attend the conference. Not only is the conference very important to parents, its also great opportunity for the teachers to meet students and their families.

“The Correspondence School parents, caregivers and whanau are an extremely valuable part of the children’s learning experience,” says Chief Executive, Rod Browning. “Typically Correspondence School students learn in isolation, by this I mean they are not part of a traditional school setting and they can often be working at home. Their whanau play an incredibly important supervisory role. We often describe this as a learning triangle consisting of: Student, Parent and Teacher.”

“As technology continues to offer more solutions – we hope to use Internet technology to improve Correspondence School students’ access to education. Our E-section pilot is currently looking at some e-solutions for distance learning.”

The Correspondence School – New Zealand’s largest school – currently has around 19,000 students on its roll.
