“New money for Tertiary Education Institutions (TEIs) announced in the budget came as a welcome relief for students threatened with fee increases of up to 12% next year” Aotearoa Tertiary Students Association National President Keith Clark said today.

“Today’s announcement of an additional 67 million dollars is seen as a positive confirmation by the government of it’s commitment to increased funding of TEIs, and a real step towards reversing the inertia of National’s 9 year pillage of the public tertiary sector” said Clark.

“Students however, remain concerned that Polytechnics may become the poor sister when compared to the 8 Universities. An urgent review of funding for these community institutions within the context of strategic funding and collaborative community advancement must be addressed by TEC” stated Clark.

“30 million dollars of new money for research should mean that all Universities in New Zealand will be better off due to their established research capacity when bidding for this contestable funding.

“ATSA consider that because our University sector operates not only as critic but also conscious of society” Minister Maharey has correctly made research funding contingent on accepting the fee stabilisation offer.” Said Clark.

“Fee stabilisation is the necessary first step towards meaningful and long term reductions in the cost of education for all New Zealanders” stated Clark. While this budget has not given us reductions, it does help a stable base for TEC to work with.”
