Nation Day of Action for Debt Bomb Campaign

Students around the country are today participating in the Aotearoa Tertiary Students Association (ATSA) National Day of Action for the 'Student Debt is a Time Bomb' campaign.

In ten short years, student debt has grown to five billion dollars. Currently, over half our population is related to someone with student debt. In other words, student debt doesn't just affect students - it affects their parents, children, partners, families and communities. This is why students are taking a stand today.

The ATSA President, Julie Pettett, is present at the Waiariki Institute of Technology today where students are protesting against the time bomb education has become. "Students have had enough of the government dumping the cost of the knowledge economy on us," said Pettett. "The ATSA Day of Action shows that students will not lie down and be driven into debt, we will continue to fight against growing student debt."

"This campaign asks people to acknowledge the seriousness of student debt. It also asks people to help diffuse the bomb by supporting New Zealand students and voting for education. Otherwise, how much will our education cost our children?"
