New performance-based research fund a positive step for New Zealand

The tertiary education sector's performance-based research funding system announced today is a good step towards fostering excellence and innovation, according to Education Forum policy adviser Norman LaRocque.

The government today announced more than $200 million over the next four years for extra performance-based funding for research and said it had accepted all the recommendations of a working group established in June to advise on how the scheme would work.

Mr LaRocque said investment in top quality research in the tertiary education sector was a good way to help boost innovation in the economy.

"The extra funding is an excellent step to help retain, attract and develop world-class researchers which, in turn, will help drive the type of innovation that New Zealand's economy needs.

"Funding quality research, and giving more funding to the higher-quality researchers, can only be good for economic growth and national wellbeing."
