Auckland College of Education Librarian honoured

Auckland College of Education Librarian Peter Hughes was today awarded the fellowship of the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) at its annual conference.

“Peter has made an outstanding contribution to library development here at the College and in the tertiary and research sectors generally – the recognition is richly deserved,” says the General Manager of Academic Services at Auckland College of Education, Stuart Windross.

“Peter is a rare person with wide-ranging interests backed by extensive scholarship and sought-after management skills. Library leadership is his forte. He focuses on service to communities and library clients to fit modern-day needs”.

Since becoming Librarian of the Sylvia Ashton-Warner College Library in 1996, Peter has driven and participated in a major review of the library and implementation of its outcome to service the College academic and student body, including development of a significant IT capability and a major shift from paper-based to electronic resources. He has also promoted and developed links between the Library’s professional expertise and the College’s education programmes.

Peter has previously held positions in the Alexander Turnbull Library and University of Auckland. Amongst many professional associations he has been convenor of the Auckland working party for the Dictionary of NZ Biography, Auckland Museum representative on the New Zealand Academy for the Humanities and member of the steering committee for the New Zealand Print Culture History Project.
