English's education appointment welcomed

Education Forum chairman John Morris has welcomed the appointment of Bill English as National's education spokesman, saying it showed the importance that the political party placed in the portfolio.

Mr Morris said the Education Forum looked forward to working with Bill English, and representatives from other political parties, to further develop sensible education policy ideas and, just as importantly, to turn those ideas into progress on the ground.

The National Party had made good progress in developing a strong policy for schools, culminating in the publication of Schools of Excellence in September. Mr English's intellect and experience will allow the party to build on that work in both the tertiary/training and early childhood sectors.

"We have had a productive working relationship with Nick Smith and Simon Power and we look forward to continuing that with Bill English," Mr Morris said.
