“The New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers welcomes the announcement yesterday by the Minister of Education that the education export levy fee would not be increased this year for private training establishments,” said Sandra McKersey, President.

“Removing Clause 5 from the Education (Export Education Levy) Amendment Bill which is now before the Education and Science Select Committee ensures that private providers are on a level playing field with the public sector. It also means that providers are not being penalised for failures of their business competitors.”

“The Government will still retain the power to charge private training establishments for costs incurred by the Government reimbursing international students who face financial losses following the failure of a private training establishment, but changes, including more rigorous student fee protection measures will mean that failures on the scale of Carich or Modern Age will be less likely in the future.” Mrs McKersey added that this move by the Government to protect what is a $2 billion dollar industry, and the third largest foreign exchange earner is applauded.
