Rally For Human Rights At Parliament

UniQ, the representative group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning students at Victoria University of Wellington, will be joining many diverse groups at a rally at Parliament on Monday 23rd of August in support of the Civil Union Bill and other human rights that are being challenged by a vocal minority.

"As well as attempting to deny couples equitable recognition of their relationships, there is a vocal minority in this country who would condemn solo parenting, the legalisation of homosexuality, the recent prostitution law reform and the right of a woman to seek an abortion" said UniQ Co-President Madeleine Drew today.

"We are gathering in the grounds of Parliament, with representatives from every political persuasion, to show support for both the Civil Union Bill, currently before Select Committee, and the human rights New Zealanders currently enjoy" said Drew.

Supporters of the rally will be gathering in the grounds of Parliament from 11.30am on Monday 23 August. The groups will include International Socialists, ACT on campus, Young Labour, the Greens, many community groups and a wide variety of people from all walks of life. It is intended that the rally be a colourful and non-confrontational event.
