Seminar: Student loans and human rights: are women the victims of discrimination?

Massey University's Stuart Birks and Rachel Baxter present a seminar on the Human Rights Commission case considering a complaint made by the New Zealand University Students' Association against student loans.

The NZUSA claim is that the student loans scheme discriminates against women because, the students say, the average loan repayment time is 15 years for males and 28 years for females.

It's a claim economics researcher Rachel Baxter says number-crunching shows to be contradictory, unsubstantiated and flawed.

Rachel Baxter will talk to her paper on student loans and issues relating to the HRC complaint. Stuart Birks will talk on wider Equal Employment Opportunity issues, in the context of economics (market failure) and law (human rights).

The event is a joint Education Forum / Law and Economics Association of New Zealand seminar.
