Outstanding performance by Young New Zealand Chemists
The 2006 New Zealand Chemistry Olympiad team won 3 silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2006 International Chemistry Olympiad held 2-10 July in Gyeongju, Korea.
This is the best performance by a New Zealand team in 15 years of competing, Silver medals were won by: Joshua Baker, from Newlands College, Wellington, and Kuan-Lun Huang and James Park, from Auckland Grammar School. The Bronze medal was won by Richard Stebbing, from Northcote College, Auckland.
According to the Senior Mentor of the team, Dr Jan Giffney, from St Cuthbert's College, Auckland the 2 five hour exams were particularly hard - a situation New Zealand teams usually do better in than some other teams like the Australians who expect to surpass the Kiwi team.
The teams return home tomorrow (Wednesday).
