2006 Undergraduate Science Scholarships Announced

Two university students from Dunedin and Auckland have won Undergraduate Science Scholarships awarded by the New Zealand National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to recognise top secondary school science students and to help them in their first year of university study. This year’s recipients are Jonathan Squire, who is studying in Science and Music, and Riddhi Gupta, who is studying a conjoint degree in Science and Political studies. Each receives a scholarship of $1500 to assist with study costs.

The National Commission Chair, Margaret Austin will present the scholarships to the students at the Rutherford Memorial Lecture in Auckland on 31 July and Dunedin on 14 August. Sir Paul Nurse, one of UK’s foremost biological scientists is this year’s speaker. Jonathan, who was Dux at Logan Park High School in 2005, and Riddhi, who achieved the University of Auckland Undergraduate Scholarship in 2005, were chosen from the many applications for their outstanding academic records, demonstrated interest and ability in science, and leadership potential.

The UNESCO NZ Undergraduate Science Scholarships are awarded annually, in association with the Secondary Principals Association of New Zealand (SPANZ), to first year university students with citizenship or permanent resident status, who are enrolled in either applied science or engineering at a New Zealand university.
