Local School Chases National Jump Jam Glory

After being placed third at the regional Jump Jam Competition, a Christchurch school has its sights set on winning the national championships in Auckland on 2 December.

Jump Jam is a new and exciting dance style sweeping New Zealand schools and a group of students from Kaiapoi North School are determined to be crowned the best in the country.

A form of 'Kidz Aerobix', Jump Jam has been developed by world aerobic’s champion, Brett Fairweather, to encourage primary and intermediate school children to get active.

The 10-member Kaiapoi North team consisting of year seven and eight students were thrilled to finish third at the regional competition especially as this was the first time they had entered.

“We were really pleased to do so well for our first attempt,” says Kaiapoi North School teacher Heidi Roberts. “Now we are really excited to have the chance to go to Auckland to prove ourselves against the best.”

Competing teams will be judged on presentation, creativity of moves, sychronisation, energy, and props.

The team has put hours of practice into their competition preparations and is calling on Canterbury to help them take on the nation in Auckland in two weeks.

“We have been practicing for the competition in our lunch hours, after school and even at morning tea. We are a committed team and we know we can do well,” says Heidi Roberts.

The Kaiapoi North School team have embarked on a sponsorship drive to raise the $6,000 required to get to the competition in Auckland. Sponsors will be given advertising in the school newsletter and brand exposure to a national audience.
