TODD ENERGY SCHOLAR FOR 2006

Massey University student Sheinach Dunn has been awarded the first-ever Todd Foundation Scholarship in Energy Research. Of Ngati Maniapoto and Ngati Raukawa descent, Sheinach’s Scottish heritage on her father’s side is reflected in her name.

She has a BSc Hons, majoring in zoology, and now wants to complete a PhD in the sustainable renewable energy field. Sheinach’s doctoral research will focus on hydrogen as a clean-burning fuel that does not produce either carbon dioxide or toxic emissions. Her PhD project will investigate electrocatalysts for the efficient conversion of electricity to hydrogen and hydrogen to electricity. Sheinach’s project will contribute to current research being carried out by Massey University and Norwegian researchers on the development of more cost-effective and efficient hydrogen energy technologies, such as portable fuel cells for cars.

She began university study after a career in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as an avionic technician and was in the RNZAF for more than six years.

The Todd Foundation Scholarship in Energy Research is worth $25,000 per annum for up to three years, with a one-off payment of up to $3000 to assist with conference attendance. The selection panel, chaired by Mr John Todd, was impressed with Sheinach’s work ethic and clear determination to succeed.
