sPACIFICally PACIFIC has come of age - Join the week of celebrations from Sunday 12 August - Friday 16 August
Five years ago as part of a Ministry of Education initiative led by Rose Fatiolofa, Regional Pacific Education Coordinator, sPACIFICally PACICFIC began as a two day event. The objective was to engage with the Pacific community to raise achievement of Pacific students and reduce disparity in education. It was seen as important to set something up to promote the career pathway for the students and to encourage Pacific parents to support this.
Rose approached government agencies such as MSD, HB District Health Board, Career services and Police to support the initiative. This group formed a committee, which has assisted with the development of this project. This group has grown significantly and now includes many other agencies.
From a two-day event in 2003, which included careers, day and a cultural festival this event has now grown to a full week of celebrating Pacifica. As well as the events during the week, this year has concentrated on specific areas such as developing young pacific leaders (secondary school students) with a youth camp to motivate, inspire and develop these young people. A fono has also been held for Pacific women and one is planned for men.
Full details of the week's activities are included in the leaflet attached.
