Stand Up! Stand Out! Winners Announced
Secondary school students from across Auckland took to the stage last Friday night for the finals of this year’s Manukau Secondary Schools Performing Arts Awards – Stand Up! Stand Out!
Students from nine secondary schools in Auckland and Manukau competed in music and dance in front of a full crowd of school supporters, family and friends at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre,
Manukau schools that made it into the finals included James Cook High School, Kings College and Mangere College.
They were joined by Tuakau College, Waiuku College, Tamaki and Lynfield Colleges as well as Mt Albert and Mt Roskill Grammar Schools.
Musician and producer King Kapisi, one of four judges at the competition, was blown away by the talent. “Seeing all the schools come together for the finals was amazing. The talent on show was impressive and the hard work the students put in really showed,” he said.
“The standard of music was high and the level of creativity for some was to an international standard. The one thing that we were trying to push and acknowledge this year was originality and these kids delivered.”
Full of high energy, students from Auckland’s Mt Roskill Grammar School gave some outstanding performances, and came away with two winners and two runner-ups across the six performing arts categories.
Holding up the Manukau front, Mangere College were winners of the contemporary band category as well as runner-up in the dance group category.
Stand Up! Stand Out! is an annual Manukau City Council arts event open to secondary schools from across the Auckland region.
