Students to run Art Auction

Alfriston College enterprise students and a local business will celebrate their achievements this year through an Art Auction that will take place at the school in early December.

The artwork is created by Imagenation, a family-owned and operated company that established a partnership with the school. Imagenation is a design company that specialises in creating unique and contemporary indigenous art.

In response to student research of the meanings of Maori place-names, the artists created images reflecting the history, landmarks and iconic ideas associated with each place.

The students researched this background using the extensive resources available through the Manukau Libraries.

“The students gained research skills through a real-life research activity that also benefited the business. This illustrates the value of adding enterprising approaches to regular school learning,” says Sarah Harvey, project co-ordinator for the City of Manukau Education Trust (COMET). COMET facilitates enterprising school-business projects with six secondary schools in the Manukau region.

The Art Auction takes place on December 5. The students will host and manage the entire event. “This celebrates the fantastic learning opportunities that students have gained from working collaboratively with a business,” adds Sarah.

Education 4 Enterprise (E4E) is an innovative and exciting pilot project (funded by the Ministry of Education and NZ Trade and Enterprise) which aims at enhancing the learning of secondary school students by enterprising projects with local businesses and larger corporates. E4E develops and fosters partnerships and links within the local business community and schools.
