Key To Open Rebuilt College
Prime Minister John Key will open and rededicate the revamped One Tree Hill College, Penrose, on the morning of Friday 13 March 2009.
Mr Key will unveil a plaque celebrating the $15 million rebuilding of the college, formerly known as Penrose High School.
His visit is being billed as one of the most important by a national politician in the college’s 54-year history.
It coincides with a significant improvement in the college’s fortunes, including new facilities, a growing student roll, improved academic achievements and the rehanging of the college’s world-class art collection.
Board of Trustees deputy chair Graeme Hunt described Mr Key’s visit as a red-letter day for the college.
“The college was officially opened by the minister of education, Ronald Algie, in 1955. Mr Key’s decision to open and rededicate the college reaffirms the government’s commitment to the rejuvenation of state education.”
A ticket-only cocktail party to celebrate the art collection will be held on the evening of 13 March. Tickets are being sold to art lovers, past pupils and friends of the college to highlight the national importance of the collection which includes significant works from Colin McCahon, Gretchen Albrecht, W.A. Sutton, Patrick Hanly, Robin White, Toss Woollaston, Allen Maddox, Don Peebles and Ralph Hotere.
