Cinema Projection School Launched

SPROCKET PROJECTION SCHOOL

Media Release: Thursday 16 April, 2009

Cinema Projection School Launched

If you wanted to learn about projecting movies, up until now you would have had to fly to Sydney to take a course or persuade a projectionist to teach you the trade.

That didn’t sound very reasonable to Academy Cinemas’ manager Gina Dellabarca, so she has devised her own course which launches in June.

‘Cinema Projection for Beginners’ is a two day course designed to teach participants the basic process of projecting theatrical quality cinema. The course will take place at the Academy Cinemas in Auckland on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of June from 9am to 1pm, and costs $500.

Experienced projectionist and technician Phil Greig will be teaching. Dellabarca says, “Phil has previously worked with Peter Jackson as well as in cinemas throughout New Zealand, so he knows his stuff. He has also done some teaching of this very subject matter in the past, so as well as being passionate about his field Phil is able to translate that into everyday language so he can share his knowledge.”

The course is designed to be interesting and useful to people already working in the film industry, those that would like to, and also to anyone who simply has an interest in the mysterious workings behind the magic of movies.

Phil Greig will take participants through a brief history of cinema projection followed by an invitation to the inside of the Academy Cinemas projection booth. There he will teach how a projector works, what can go wrong, and how to correctly play movies. By the end of the weekend everyone will have mastered the basic principles of projecting movies, including some first hand experience in ‘making up’ and ‘breaking down’ 35mm film, and ‘threading up’ the projector.

The course has only six places, and consequently it is expected to sell out fast. Other dates will be offered once these places are filled, so anyone interested should contact Gina Dellabarca on 021 427 553 or email gina[at]academycinemas.co.nz.
