Hot on the heels of its first semester professional cookery course, UCOL Wairarapa is on the lookout for the region’s aspiring bakers.
As part of the successfully relaunched Professional Cookery Programme, UCOL is offering a Certificate in Baking and Pastry course in the second semester.
Just over half of the eighteen places have already been snapped up by current students who are soon to complete the Certificate in Professional Cookery.
“Baking and pastry making is slightly more complex than general cooking,” says cookery lecturer Carmel Hughes. “There is a definite skill set a baker must master and there are more critical elements involved such as the ingredient’s temperature and the humidity and temperature of the kitchen.”
The 20 week
full time course begins on 26 July and students are assessed
in theory and in their practical skills.
“We will
explore certain ingredients and learn what they do and how
they work,” says Carmel. “instead of just blindly adding
them because the recipe says so.”
“We are delighted with the support the community has given to the relaunched cookery programme,” says Campus Manager Angela Hewitt. “The Certificate in Baking and Pastry is another sought after qualification that UCOL Wairarapa can offer and deliver at a local level.”
Enrolments for the second semester are now open but places are limited. Contact (06) 946 2300, 0800 GO UCOL or www.ucol.ac.nz
