Tech Hui Conference

Tuesday, 8th June 2010

Tech Hui Conference

The annual student-led technology conference Tech Hui is to take place on Tuesday the 15th June at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Karori.

Tech Hui was started in 2005 as a small conference held at Wellington College, but this years’ Hui looks to be bigger than ever with seven inspirational keynote speakers that are sure to capture the enthusiasm and interest of all who attend. With students from all over the country coming to Wellington for the event it promises to be a highlight for all those interested in Technology and I.T.

"As a student-run conference it offers an innovative perspective on technology which other students can relate to, without feeling as though it is simply a 'geek-fest'" says year 13 Samuel Marsden student Maddie Ollivier, a student organizer of the event.  "We are also privileged to have all of Wellington's major tertiary institutions involved" continues Maddie. "We aim to firstly inspire our audience by exposing them to innovative and exciting keynotes followed by tours and workshops run by our Tertiary partners. These workshops cover everything from courses offered to hands on samples of what different courses involve."

Tech Hui 2010 shows off a list of highly regarded speakers, with individuals from many areas of the IT sector. Jason Leong, one of the founders of Web Startup Pocketsmith to Brenda Frisk, Business Development Director at Nextspace and Melissa Clark-Reynolds founder and CEO of the online world MiniMonos will be speaking, amongst others.

Sponsors provide funding to make Tech Hui possible, and Shane Allison, Year 13 at Wellington College another student organizer, says “The sponsors are the lifeblood of the event, and this year sponsors such as Catalyst I.T., Toshiba New Zealand, HP and RED are so involved in the I.T. sector that they really do more than just fund the event.”

Competitions are a major part of harnessing student innovation and involvement at Tech Hui, and 2010 sees two competitions open with an iPod touch and Deep Exploration software to be won. Representatives from NextSpace and RED will be judging the competitors and the winners will be announced on the day of the event.

With an estimated attendee list of over 400 and little under a week to go, Tech Hui 2010 is a must-attend for anyone with a passion or merely a little interest in technology.
