Time Running Out for Scholarship Applications

Media Release for immediate use: Monday 16 August 2010

Time Running Out for Scholarship Applications

Only 10 days remain before applications close for the Mike Pero Mortgages Foundation tertiary scholarships for students planning their first year of study in 2011.

Applications close on Thursday 26 August 2010 and Mike Pero Mortgages Chief Executive Shaun Riley says the Scholarship Programme is once again proving very popular.

“We’ve had a great response so far but with only about 10 days to go I want to encourage students to get those applications in. The programme provides two scholarships of $5,000 and one of $2,500, recognising the importance of tertiary education to young New Zealanders.”

The Mike Pero Mortgages Foundation Scholarship Programme is in its fifth year and is for prospective first time tertiary students aged between 17 and 25 from a variety of study areas.

Shaun Riley says from time to time previous scholarship winners provide updates on their studies.

“It’s really encouraging to hear the success stories from these students. Every one of them says the scholarship they were awarded had a significant impact on them and their families.”

“We are very confident that once again the calibre of applications will be of an extremely high standard. We are simply looking for outstanding and well-rounded young people wanting to pursue any field of tertiary study.”

Last year the programme proved very popular. Almost 1,000 applications, all of an extremely high standard, were submitted from around the country Shaun Riley says he’s expecting a similar response again this year.

“We recognise the cost of tertiary study can be a challenge for students and their families – in some cases it may even be the reason someone does not attend university or polytech,” he says.

Applications for the 2011 Mike Pero Mortgages Foundation Scholarship Programme close on Thursday 26 August 2010. Application forms are available online at

The successful recipients will be announced in November.
