This year’s Digicel Battle of the Minds Quiz has been the most closely contested competition in the game’s five-year history.
Eight teams have been battling it out for the chance to be the ultimate winner of Digicel BOMQ 2010. Four teams are left standing. This Saturday - Samoa College will take on St. Mary's College for a place in the finals, whilst Robert Louis Stevenson goes up against new-comer LDS Church College for a chance in the finals.
In the past four years, only two schools have won the bragging rights to be called the Champions, Samoa College and Robert Louis Stevenson.
Samoa College have played well in their pool winning every game comfortably. The same can be said for Robert Louis Stevenson in their pool. But there is also a big chance for St. Marys and LDS Church College to win their games against these former champs.
Battle of the Minds is the brainchild of the Rotaract Club of Apia (ROCA). It came about as ROCA’s main focus over the years has been the education of the youth of Samoa.
ROCA’s Vice President Situfu Salesa says schools from around Samoa are given the opportunity to participate in the Quiz – with eight schools entering the 2010 competition.
“Right now we have just completed the fourth week of play – so next week we will see the remaining four schools battling it out for a place in the finals”, Situfu Says
Situfu says all schools have worked really hard for Digicel BOMQ and that this study has shown through the high level of knowledge they bring to every game.
“This competition is one way to help the students competing study for their end of year exams and for their School C,” he says.
“Judging by the number of correct answers that have been fielded – every one of these students is set to ace all exams.”
Paul VI College student Potu Puipui says she entered Digicel BOMQ because she wanted to share her knowledge and opinions with other students in addition to using the Quiz to prepare for her up coming exams.
“The best thing about Battle of the Minds is to have been given this opportunity to express my knowledge and to compete with the other schools,” Potu says.
“Especially as we are the only school from the other side of the island.”
“But most importantly, for us being here is it not about winning or losing – but just to get out there and have some fun.”
Potu says the highlight of the competition for her so far has been the first week.
“On the first day of competition we were introduced to the other students and we have made so many new friends,” she says.
“BOM has been a great experience and I would definitely encourage other students to enter.”
ROCA would like to thank all those businesses who have supported this year’s Quiz in no particular order: Digicel, TV1, MESC, EPC, NUS, Samoa Stationary, MENA, CSL, Seb and Rene, TeamSpirit, Eveni Curruthers, Samoa Commercial Bank, Seafood Gourmet, PUMA and Party Function and Hire.
The Digicel BOMQ semi-finals will be televised this Saturday on TV1 at 8.30pm complete with the DigiMinds Quiz set up for viewers.
It’s really all up in the air and there's only one way to find out who wins. By tuning into TV1 on Saturday night.
