Scholarships for women breaking down barriers in the trades

Wednesday, 17 November, two WelTec students were awarded a New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women (NZFGW) (Wellington Branch) scholarship. The Scholarship is awarded to a high achieving female student, studying in a career area where there are few women. Each year the federation awards one scholarship, however this year the top two candidates were so outstanding the federation awarded two scholarships to WelTec students.

Second year Automotive student and self proclaimed petrol head, Tatiana Massey along with first year Horticulture student, Sara Timothy, were nominated by their tutors for outstanding performance in their studies at WelTec.

Automotive Tutor, Cliff McKenna nominated Tatiana for the award, impressed with her hard work throughout the year. “It makes me proud as a Tutor to see her success and achievements throughout the year. She’s got an amazing work ethic, is self-motivated and proactive. We received excellent reports from employers during her work placements.”

Cliff encourages further participation from women in the automotive industry, “It’s definitely good to have more women join the automotive industry, and these scholarships help to provide additional support to female students looking to join.”

Automotive student Tatiana Massey was surprised to be nominated and was excited to receive the scholarship. “I screamed – I heard the news and couldn’t believe it,” says Tatiana. Tatiana has always been interested in cars. She has previously trained and worked as an electrical engineer and a sound engineer, but has since come back to her first love. “When I was a girl I asked for cars over dolls, I’ve always been a bit of a petrol head,” she says.

Horticulture student Sara Timothy is also very clear on her career path. “Horticulture is great. It’s hard work, but the freedom to work outside and work on a range of projects is awesome. My studies at WelTec have been great – the Tutors are really helpful and knowledgeable. I’m looking forward to next year.”
