Australia: First global ranking of universities by subject
London, 4th July 2011 - Australian universities’ strengths lie in psychology, geography, modern languages and philosophy, says first global ranking of universities by subject.
Australian National University (ANU) (6th in geography, modern languages and philosophy) is the top-ranked Australian university in QS World University Rankings® by subject. 17 Australian universities featured in top 200 for psychology. 25 Australian universities represented across 26 subjects.
The social sciences series of the QS World University Rankings® by subject (revealed on 5th July on TopUniversities.com) concludes the release of the 26 individual academic disciplines ranked. Australian universities are among the world’s top-ranked universities in social science subjects including accounting, economics, sociology, law, statistics and politics.
Australia’s best-performing disciplines out of the 26 subjects ranked were geography, modern languages and philosophy, with ANU appearing an impressive 6th in all four rankings. Psychology, with 17 Australian universities featured in the top 200, was the discipline which allowed the most Australian institutions’ excellence to shine.
The QS World University Rankings® by subject are the first to rank universities at individual subject level in the world. With a methodology tailored to fit each subject, the rankings are based on Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation and Citations per Paper.
Ben Sowter, head of research at QS says, “As global mobility and the fee burden on individual students increases, rankings need to become more detailed and focused to meet the demand for comparative information.” He continues, “Australia’s strong performance across all 26 disciplines highlights the all-round excellence of the country’s universities.”
