New Prep School Principal at Scots College

8 November, 2011

New Prep School Principal at Scots College hits the ground running

After just four weeks in his new role as Principal of the Scots College Prep School, Mr John Western is throwing open the doors and welcoming in visitors for a special Public Open Day this Sunday 13 November.

“This is a great opportunity for me to welcome new families, prospective students, Old Boys, our neighbours and members of the wider community,” said Western. “I’ve only been here a short while and there’s been a whirlwind of end-of-year activity here at the College. What with the opening of our fantastic new indoor sports facility ‘The Hodge Sports Centre’ on Friday, our community-based End of Year Exhibition in the Prep School on Tuesday, and a whole raft of school sports and cultural activities, it’s been quite a month!” reflected Western.

“I am excited about the opportunities my role here at Scots presents, and feel very fortunate to be handed a Prep School that is in such great shape, and with a wonderful sense of school spirit by out-going Principal Mr Cassie, who will become Principal of the newly-formed Middle School in 2012,” confirmed Western.

“I have a great love of teaching, and have been a Principal for ten years, most recently at Queenstown Primary School. My return to Wellington means not only a great professional opportunity for me, but also for my family. My wife Lynda and I are delighted our sons Ryan and Elliot will also attend Scots next year, as we wanted the best possible education for them.”

“One of the key things that attracted me to Scots was the College’s recent accreditation as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. In the Prep School (Yr 1-6), we teach the Primary Years Program which is an enormously important differentiator for Scots from other New Zealand state and independent schools. The IB program is a whole different way of teaching – it develops comprehensive values and enquiry-based learning that will ensure our students become confident and very capable global citizens. What we teach at Scots is seamlessly aligned with an international curriculum, yet always grounded and located in the uniquely New Zealand context.”

“With the advantage of small class sizes we are able to provide a personalized environment and I am enjoying being able to get to know each boy. In a Prep School of just 130 students, that’s not only possible, but it’s also a real pleasure. I am also planning on doing some teaching, especially in the technology area using the class set of iPads the school will be purchasing next year. It’s a very exciting time to be teaching, and more importantly, to be in class,” reflected Western.
