Global Challenge Sees QMC Come 1st
In ten days over 100,000,000 questions were answered on Chinese, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Maori, Russian, Spanish and more, by 140,000 students from 800 schools in 11 countries.
In these ten days over 400 Queen Margaret College girls put up an enthusiastic fight, gaining tenth place overall, eighth place in French and Spanish, fifth in Maori and received over 100 certificates. Not to mention the overall winner for the Language Perfect Championship 2012 was Jean Lean, a Year 12 student from the College.
Jean Lean is an IB Diploma student who has been studying French at the College since Year 9. Her initial goal was to finish in the top five, but after a couple of days she found herself coming first. “It was at that moment I realised I really wanted to win this competition,” Jean explains, “I had to maintain my school work and assignments at the same time – it was tough but I kept myself motivated until the finish line.”
“It was definitely ten of the most challenging and tiring days of my life. However, I enjoyed being able to participate in such a large-scaled, global competition and representing QMC and New Zealand was pretty awesome!”
The Language Perfect Championship is run annually through the online Language Prefect programme. The College subscribes to this online learning tool which assists the students in learning languages.
Girls at QMC have really enjoyed the online programme, “I think that with or without the competition, the Language Perfect programme, as a whole, is one of the best ways for language students like me to improve our vocabulary and reading and listening comprehension. My French skills benefited greatly.”
