Cooking skills on show at the Waikato Culinary Fare

Cooking skills on show at the Waikato Culinary Fare

More than 300 students will slice, dice, bake and plate their way through a range of cooking and hospitality challenges at the Waikato Culinary Fare on June 28 and 29.

The Waikato Culinary Fare, held at Wintec’s Centre for Hospitality, is the Waikato’s largest cooking competition. The two day event features dozens of different culinary competitions where students get to show off their flair for food while also experiencing the intensity of a professional kitchen and restaurant.

Sara Refoy, Wintec’s Head of School of International Tourism, Hospitality and Events, says: “The Waikato Culinary Fare is a wonderful opportunity for both secondary school students and junior hospitality people to display their skills, innovation and creativity in the kitchen and restaurant. Each year the standard of entries and skills on display increases so we’re looking forward to seeing what’s dished up this year.”

Among the live kitchen challenges is the popular mystery box team event where a team of two cookery students are given a box of mystery ingredients and just one hour must to create a main course for two people. Also worth watching is the team skills challenge where teams of three must cook and serve four portions of an entrée, main and dessert in three hours.

Technical skills are put to the test in the knife skills challenge while outside the kitchen you can watch barista and table setting competitions and view a delectable range of food displays including cupcakes, desserts and pies.
