Wintec’s Adult Learners Award Winners

Each year Wintec acknowledges Adult Learners’ Week, He Tangata Matauranga, by awarding current students with Wintec Adult Learners’ Awards worth $1000.

This year’s winners are:

• Barry Bester, studying a Bachelor of Information Technology at Wintec’s School of Information Technology;

• Sandra Gillingham, enrolled in a Certificate in Hairdressing at Wintec’s School of International Tourism, Hospitality and Events;

• Shona Lee Thorn, enrolled in the Certificate of Media Arts at Wintec’s School of Media Arts;

• Elizabeth Tautala, studying a Bachelor of Nursing at Wintec’s Centre for Health and Social Practice.

The awards were presented last night in the Gallagher Hub and were attended by nominees, their families, as well as Wintec staff and tutors.

“We’re very proud of our adult learners, many of whom have overcome significant obstacles to study at Wintec. These awards are an excellent way to recognise their efforts and achievements,” says Mark Flowers, Wintec chief executive.

The annual awards are available to all adult learners – students aged 25 and above – studying at Wintec.

Award winners are outstanding adult learners who:

• Learn with infectious enthusiasm;

• Demonstrate a commitment to his/her programme of study;

• Support and encourage other learners to engage in learning activities;

• Are willing to share new skills, knowledge and abilities with others;

• Challenge him/herself and others with new ideas; and

• Perform roles and responsibilities associated with being an adult.

With around fifty per cent of its students classified as adult learners, Wintec is an active supporter of Adult Learners’ Week (3-7 September).
