Industry leader welcomes Home-based Childcare Review

ECE industry leader Jenny Yule is welcoming the opportunity to work closely with Government as it reviews home-based childcare.

Ms Yule, who founded PORSE, New Zealand’s largest home-based childcare provider, said the review was a great opportunity to showcase the quality early childhood education and care that the home-based service provides, particularly for under two year olds.

Ms Yule said that while the Government was still to release more detail on the review, she saw it providing a far greater insight into the value and importance of home-based childcare and why it is working so well for New Zealand families.

“As part of the review process we will strongly advocate as a voice for our educators, nannies and families. Their input will be invaluable and will help shape the positive future of home-based childcare and the vital role it plays in education and society.”

Home-based childcare, which is now the fastest growing ECE service type, offers a flexible and responsive service that meets the needs of families across the country, Ms Yule said.

“Over two decades we have developed and established philosophy and practices that today are so well aligned with the indicators of quality early childhood education and evidenced by research.

“A strong point of difference is our continuous focus on facilitating secure attachment relationships between educators and the young children in their care due to the low ratio of children to educators. This is a critical factor in supporting early brain development and laying the foundations for each child’s lifelong success," she said.

“We value professional development and training and are committed to advocating for a ‘fit for purpose’ learning pathway that meets the unique needs of the home-based childcare model.

“Educators are well resourced and supported by PORSE Programme Tutors, who are qualified and registered ECE teachers.

“We have workplace training to help educators and nannies gain the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with children, recognising learning opportunities and planning learning outcomes valued by parents and family/whānau,” she said.

Currently PORSE offers educators the NZQA approved National Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care (Level 3), a distance education course with self-paced learning and supported study options.
