Business leaders exhibit at CPIT’s Industry Expo
A positive attitude, good communication skills and a willingness to learn; these are some of the key attributes employers look for in graduates, according to over 30 business leaders from a range of industries who will be at CPIT’s first Industry Expo, held alongside Open Day on October 25, 2pm – 6pm.
Industry Expo exhibitor Beca Consulting Engineers looks for individuals with a good understanding and education in maths and sciences, who are team players, have a positive attitude, and have pride and passion in their work.
“If people have got a good work ethic and an inquiring mind and are interested in what they do… the world’s [their] oyster. They need to have skills obviously…; the basics, English, maths and sciences. They are the basic building blocks and then after being successful in their diplomas or whatever course they’re doing… to be engaged in the industry. It’s challenging, it’s interesting and rewarding,” Graeme Wells, Beca Registered Designer says.
Beca is just one of a range of businesses exhibiting at CPIT’s Madras Street Campus including representatives from ICT, outdoor education, engineering and construction, aviation and defence. Industry training providers will also be at the Trades Innovation Institute, presenting on trades in Canterbury. The Industry Expo gives people the chance to talk with business representatives about the skills they really look for and the qualifications required to pursue a particular career.
CPIT’s expert tutors will also be on hand to discuss relevant 2013 study options at both campuses and information sessions will be run throughout the day for people who want an in-depth overview of the programme best suited to their career goals. Highlights will include the opening of FLICK, an exhibition of CPIT New Zealand Broadcasting School films in a caravan and CHART’s presentation about studying Musical Arts and the music scene in Christchurch.
For those who want to find out more about student life, CPIT’s current students will be available to chat about their experiences and to lead tours of the Madras Street Campus and Trades Innovation Institute.
StudyLink will also be onsite in the Rakaia Centre to help prospective students with loan and allowance applications and advice, and a sign language interpreter will be available at the Madras Street Campus between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.
