Iwi set plan of action for Maori education

Iwi representatives will meet this week to hear and discuss their priorities and plan of action to address serious educational issues facing Maori children and adults.

Hosted by Nga Kaikokiri Matauranga, the two-day hui gets underway tomorrow (July 17) in Auckland and will include presentations from Maori academic Dr Wayne Ngata of Massey University, te reo Maori experts Erima Henare and Mahina Melbourne. Education Minister Hekia Parata as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Education and Tertiary Education Commission are also expected to deliver presentations.

“This hui is about seeing where our people are at when it comes to education, what we are going to do to lift their achievements and how we can all work together to get there,” said Nga Kaikokiri Matauranga spokesperson Awanui Black.

“We all know that Maori children aren’t doing as well as they should be and that the system needs fixing, so we are looking forward to presenting our strategy and plan action to address that.”

More than 60 iwi education providers are expected to be represented at the hui. Nga Kaikokiri Matauranga was set up last year, under the umbrella of the Iwi Leaders Forum, to advocate the education aspirations of iwi, develop a strategy to achieve those aspirations and work with the government and the multitudes of groups in the education sector to implement the strategy.
