Winners of 2013 Wella Trends Vision Awards

MIT is proud to announce the winners of this years Wella Trends Vision Awards

Manukau Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Hair and Beauty students have waited in anticipation for the winners to be announced of the in-house Wella Trends Vision Awards competition held last week at MIT’s salon.

Students and tutors gathered for the awards ceremony where the winners of the competition were revealed by industry judges Mana Dave, Brad Lepper, Natasha Boustridge and Laura Williams.

The event hosted by MIT reflects the international hair industry’s Wella Professional International Trends Vision Awards in that students were required to create and execute a concept based on one of the same four trends showcased in the international version.

This year’s theme for the international competition was The Sound of Colour and the four trends were: Fusion, Echo, Decibel and Allegra. Each student had to choose one of these trends to create their own hairstyle, make-up and outfit.

First place was awarded to Antonia Young from Manurewa who mirrored the trend Fusion, second place went to Natasha Tipene from Mangere East who was inspired by the trend Echo and in third place was Ted Yoo from Botany who used the trend Allegra as his muse.

The competition had strict time frames in which the students were given four hours to cut, colour and style their model’s hair before moving on to makeup for an hour and then getting professional photographs of their models for the judges to review.

Senior Lecturer of Hair and Beauty Sonia Baker-Johnston says “The students who were placed had the capacity to bring together all the components of hair, makeup and outfit, to create the total image.”

“They took hold of the trend they chose and pulled it apart to capture the essence of what it was about,” she says.

“I am very proud of all my students and the hard work they all put in to create these trends. Every one of them demonstrated the skill and creativity necessary to work in a professional environment.”

First place winner Antonia Young says “I was shocked when I found out I came first because it was such a big competition and I didn’t think I would place.”

“When I met the judges I was star-struck and didn’t know what to do. I think I am still a bit dumbfounded now,” she admits.

Natasha Tipene who was awarded second place says “As soon as I saw the theme Echo I knew I wanted to do it. I loved the dirty, wet, oily look and had heaps of fun pulling my concept together.”

Ted Yoo who came in third place says “My mum is a hairdresser and owns the salon that I now work in. When I was younger I tried everything except hairdressing but in the end, everything I did lead up to what I’m doing now.”

“I would love to be the next Mana Dave and travel around doing competitions and become the best in New Zealand,” he says.

All three winners say they would love to compete in the Wella Professional International Trends Vision Awards.

Antonia Young received a scholarship to do a full year’s worth of Wella courses, a pair of scissors and the full Wella hair product range. Second and third placers Natasha Tipene and Ted Yoo both received aprons, capes and the full Wella hair product range.
