Students continue protesting fee rises at University of Auckland, 4 arrested

4 students have been arrested at the University of Auckland after occupying Vice Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon's office.

The protest comes as the University is set to raise fees 4% – the maximum allowable by law – in an annual meeting at which McCutcheon's salary is also likely to be raised, keeping him in the position of highest paid public official in New Zealand, earning over $640,000 a year.

The University is required by law to hold this fee setting meeting in public, however after years of student protests against fees the University now holds the meeting in a secret location, leading students to occupy his office as a last recourse to protest fee rises.

One of the young female student protesters was choked by a University of Auckland staff member during the protest, and is currently considering pressing charges.
