Rangi Ruru Wins Nga Kete Debating Tournament

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has taken home the top prize in the Nga Kete Debating Tournament.

The competition celebrates women’s suffrage and is open to teams of girls from all Christchurch secondary schools.

The Year 9 team of Lily Barnett, Ruby Blake-Manson and Madaleine Halliday debated a range of moots dealing with gender issues. In a close-fought final against a team of Year 10 girls from St Margaret’s College, the girls convinced the judges that staying at home to raise children is viable feminist option.

Teacher in charge of debating at Rangi Ruru, Nicola Allely believes the title is well-deserved.

”It was thrilling to hear the girls speak so well about gender issues after a year’s diligent debating practice. I was particularly proud of their achievement at a tournament which aims to celebrate women’s suffrage,” said Ms Allely.

The Nga Kete Debating Tournament was held on 25 November in Christchurch.
