ACG Strathallan art and design students shine

ACG Strathallan art and design students shine on national stage

27 October, 2015. Local ACG Strathallan students have been doing Papakura proud in the national Young Designers Awards, scooping five 1st places across different categories. Held in Christchurch this month, these students competed with the best of young artists and designers across New Zealand.

Matt Humber, Curriculum Leader and Design Teacher, says, “We encourage our students to enter the competition to broaden their exposure to high level competition. The best and most talented students from around New Zealand submit work so it is a great way of enabling comparison and provides motivation to excel.”

First places from ACG Strathallan include:

• Sarah Carruthers, Year 8, Visual Art and Design, 2D painting

• Rosie Charge, Year 8, Visual Art and Design, Sculpture

• Emma Turner, Year 9, Fashion Design, Wearable Arts

• Drayton Lyden, Year 13, Living Environments, Furniture Design

• Rhys Thomas, Visual Art and Design, Photography

This isn’t the first year of success at the Young Designer Awards for ACG Strathallan. For the past 8 years, ACG Strathallan students have consistently received top awards. Matt says that one of the drivers for success is that the students have to be self motivated to compete, as they have to construct the final outcome over and above the expectations of normal school work.

Robin Kirkham, Principal, ACG Strathallan says, “We also have dedicated expert teachers who are willing to provide additional capacity for each individual; this also strengthens our students’ ability to achieve. We’re so proud of each student who has entered. They have all submitted pieces to the best of their ability, which in turn makes them better designers.”

The success of the Young Designer Awards also reflects the outstanding achievements of ACG Strathallan art and design students in the Cambridge International Examinations. The Young Designer Awards is a charity set up to encourage creativity, confidence and the pursuit of excellence through design.
